Most Australians own and use a kettle every day and often more than once, and every single one of them will have a story to tell about a time their kettle bothered them or failed them. The goal of the EO kettle was to re-imagine what a reliable kettle might look like for everyday users.
The design features no moving parts and consists of a simple construction to avoid any chance of something wearing out or failing. A digital display and input dial place the kettle firmly in the 21st century with features that many prospective buyers would be looking for in a new kettle.
Reliability was something I aimed to improve with mechanical simplification, or better yet, the lack of anything mechanical. Constant cycling and heating of plastic parts often lead to a premature failure of lids on my kettle as well as the interviewees’ kettles. To fix this problem I came up with a lidless design. A simple domed top allows the user to fill the vessel without any splashing, boil the water with minimal steam or hot water escape and then pour, all without ever having to open the lid of the kettle.
By re-imagining the traditional kettle with a lidless, mechanically simplified design, the EO kettle addresses common reliability issues and introduces a sleek and modern aesthetic. The incorporation of a digital display and input dial positions it as a 21st-century essential, catering to the expectations of contemporary users.
The design process, undertaken during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, reflects resilience and adaptability, ultimately resulting in a product that not only meets functional requirements but also elevates the everyday experience of using a kettle. The EO kettle stands as a symbol of efficiency, reliability, and forward-thinking design in the realm of everyday household appliances.
